We had the great privilege of watching the talented folkmoot dancers from Latvia this afternoon. We were told that all the dancers in the group only performed as a hobby, they all actually had other jobs to make a living. The speaker of the group was a dance teacher, and she had a great sense of humor, along with beautiful grace as she performed. The Latvia group performed quite a few dances & each dance told a story..One of the favorites was the boy sees girl, boy chases girl, then girl gives in, then girl chases boy.. It was very cute & entertaining.. Check out the videos of their dances.. They were a delightful group & we are truly glad they came to visit us today.. The Folkmoot USA parade today in Waynesville NC was very hot, but full of appreciative eyes as the Folkmoot dancers performed this afternoon. The Folkmoot Festival is back again! Coming this Thursday July 22nd through August 1st the festival moves into the Western NC area. The festival is a two week celebration of the world’s cultural heritage represented through folk music and dance. With over 350 performers demonstrating their heritage through traditional dance and music in colorful authentic reproduction costumes. While throughout the history of this event over 200 cultural groups from over 100 different countries have attended the ceremonies, countries invited to attend this year include: Russia, Latvia, Jordan, Portugal, Poland, Turkey, India, UK, France, and Switzerland.

The 21^st annual event will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, August 27 and from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Saturday, August 28 at the Cruso Community Center, U.S. 276 South.

The 2010 donation quilt “Underground Railroad” is hand-quilted and made by members of Cruso Friendship Club Tuesday’s Quilting/Sewing group.

The 21st Annual Cruso Quilt Show is sponsored by the Cruso Friendship Club.    This signature event displays quilts made by members of the group and others loaned for the event. You will see and admire beautiful antique quilts, hand and machine-made quilts, wall hangings and wearable art.    Proceeds from the this event provide two scholarships to Pisgah High students, Valentine fruit baskets to 50 shut-ins, food for those in need and the purchase/installation of windows in the Cruso Community Center, formerly, Cruso Schoolhouse 1928 – 1966.   Some of our member’s husbands attended Cruso School, George W. Cogburn, Carroll Pressley, Raymond Revis and Gerald Wheeler.

This beautiful Queen Quilt will go to a lucky winner Saturday, August 28 at 4:00 p.m.  Donation tickets are $1 or 6 for $5 and can be purchased from any member of the Cruso Friendship Club, at the Cruso Community Center or during the quilt show.  Also, featured at the Quilt Show will be a fabric shop, scissor sharpening, antique sewing machine sale, sewing machine repair/service, sewing notions and a lunch counter……don’t forget to visit the thrift shop.  Bring a friend, shop, have lunch and enjoy these beautiful quilts.  Admission is free.

Oveda Wheeler is the president of the group during winter months and Connie Silverstein presides during summer months.  The membership ranges from 10-15 in the winter and 35-40 in the summer months.  Members take turn working at their Craft Shop and Thrift Shop.  They meet monthly; however, the quilting/sewing group meets weekly.  New members are welcome.
